Dear Grilled Cheese Sandwiches:
I am sorry.
I am sorry for . . .
All the times I have burned you to a crisp because I was not paying attention.
The times I disrespected the sacred art of grilled cheese cuisine and instead of devoting all of my attention to crafting beautifully, evenly-toasted sandwiches, I was off…
Asking Google questions,
Painting watercolors,
Taking selfies,
Windsurfing,
Cavorting with the Devil,
While you sat there, alone on the stove, on one side for far too long. Sitting until I was pulled out of neglectful reveries by the scandalized beeping of the smoke alarm.
I’m Sorry, Grilled Cheese Sandwiches
And each time, I find that I have tarnished your magnificence by burning the most perfect food that ever existed.
This is my apologies, Grilled Cheese Sandwiches. (Photo by Pixolo photography, courtesy of Unsplash.)
You never complain, and somehow—in spite of one side of you being charred into near oblivion–you are still pretty delicious in your cheesy glory.
Imagine what it would be like if I devoted my full attention to toasting both sides equally.
Imagine how much more delicious and perfectly cheesy and bready you would be.
I Have Learned a Lesson
And this reminds me that when I go through life half-distracted, trying to do too many things at once, areas in my life inevitably become over-grilled or under-grilled and I miss their unique perfection.
Because I don’t pay attention.
I am not focused.
And I forget the sacred art of doing one thing at a time.
It is time I turn over a new leaf (or at least the grilled cheese sandwich).
Sincerely, Shelly
